Net worth by age percentile calculator

Net worth by age, from the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF) for 2022: the median household and the 25th, 75th, 90th and 99th percentiles in each age group, in 2022 dollars. Enter an age and a net worth to see where a household falls. These are the same figures Coastline's How You Compare panel measures a plan against.

About the 56th percentile for households age 35–44 (median $135,000)

A household aged 40 with $200,000 of net worth is at about the 56th percentile for ages 35–44, whose median is $135,000. Net worth here is everything owned (home equity, retirement accounts, savings, businesses) less everything owed.

75+$90,000$335,000$970,000$2,700,000$8,500,000

The median rises with age to $410,000 at 65–74 and is lower after that. The spread is wide at every age: under 35 the median is $39,000, while the 90th percentile is $320,000. Averages, which some sites quote, are several times the medians because a few very wealthy households pull them up; the percentiles describe the typical household better.

A $1 million net worth is about the 96th percentile under 35 and the 69th at 65–74. Between the published points the lookup interpolates in a straight line; beyond the 99th percentile it follows the shape of the top of the distribution, so treat very high and very low readings as approximate.

About the data

Survey estimates carry sampling error and are rounded on purpose. They describe where households stood in 2022, not what any household needs. Coastline's projection shows what a given saving rate and retirement age add up to.
